The Brooks family has passed down from generation to generation all the traditional techniques for the handcrafted manufacture of all products. Quality has always come first for Brooks and this can be seen in some saddles, such as the B66 and C17 models, which have subtly changed their design, demonstrating that what is already good from the start does not need to evolve.
The history of JB Brooks & Co dates back to 1866, when John Boultbee-Brooks founded his own company. His initial idea was to focus exclusively on leather goods and harnesses for horses, which he manufactured in Birmingham, England, where he still operates today under that name.
John always moved around the city on horseback but when a few years later, in 1878, his horse died, he decided to make those trips by bicycle. Something not very common for the time.
The bicycle Brooks used for his commuting was equipped with a wooden saddle that was a bit uncomfortable, if not quite annoying. Thanks to his experience dealing with materials such as leather, he adapted and lined the saddle of his bike with leather to gain comfort and, also, elegance.
Brooks patented his first bicycle saddle in October 1882. His words were "I was dissatisfied with the saddles that were available, which had little protection against the vibrations produced by bad roads".
In the early 1900's Brooks already had an extensive catalog of saddles and bicycle accessories such as tool bags, accessories or tubes for wheels with the same quality and recognition as in the manufacture of saddles.
Half a century later, Brooks has become a globally recognized brand, an industry leader and a mass producer with 3,000 employees and a weekly production of 80,000 saddles, which is equivalent to no more and no less than 3,000,000 saddles per year.
The Brooks family has passed down from generation to generation all the traditional techniques for the handcrafted manufacture of all products.
In 1962, Brooks as a company became part of the Raleigh Bicycle Company, one of the oldest and most prestigious bicycle manufacturing companies of the time. With this change the company moved to Birmingham, just 3 miles north of its current location.
Since 2002 Brooks has belonged to Selle Italia, although its production is still located in the United Kingdom, maintaining tradition and quality under the roof of the same factory.
Quality has always come first for Brooks and this can be seen in some saddles, such as the B66 and C17 models, which have subtly changed their design, demonstrating that what is already good from the start does not need to evolve.
